I hadn't planned on writing this post today but the arrival of shark week marked it as kind of topical. When I was first recomended the diva cup I was initially highly suspicious and quite frankly a bit grossed out I mean you have to remove a cup of blood from an area of your body that as a trans man I'm not all together that compfortable with. However determined to know what all the fuss was about and with a goal of saving the planet in mind when day 1 of shark week arrived I grabbed the cup. So here is my week with the diva cup.
Day One
I never bleed very heavily on day one so I figured it was probably a good day to try it out as if im being honest i was still suspicous of the tiny cups ability to hold the seemingly endless flow of blood, so day 1 when i was less likely to leak felt like a good idea. I was initially confused how to actually you know insert the cup but i think that was mostly due to my typically masculine refusal to read instructions but i soon figured it out. One of my biggest concerns was whether it would be compfortable to wear and whether i would feel it every time I moved which could potentially cause massive dysphoria for me but my fears were quickly solved. I probably emptied it more than i needed to but due to never having used one before I was unsure as to how quickly it would fill but in all reality i really only need to emty it once in the morning and once before bed and before a bath.
Day two
Day two is the wost. It's the day of the cramps which was another fear I was worried that having something inserted may make it hurt more just like period sex at certain points really hurts. But it didn't. I think because of how soft the silicone is it moves with you. Today is also the day I made my biggest mistake I was in a bad mood before bed and I didnt want to get out of bed to change the cup an working on the basis of yesterdays over emptying I just assumed that I would be fine. Spoiler alert it wasnt fine. I'm not going to go into detail but I would definately recomend emptying it before bed.
Day Three
I decided to do some gardening to day to see how the cup would hold up throughout some light exercise and I'm going to say I was impressed. I assumed that the cup would slip but it really didn't. The one thing I would like to test with the cup is how easy it is to change in public bathrooms a certain plus is the lack of need for bins which are often lacking in mens bathrooms but I do definately want to test it out. However that may have to wait due to the uk being on lockdown.
overall I found the cup very easy to use. It is trickyer first thing in the morning when I'm still sleepy and my joints are a little stiff but the pros definately outweigh the cons and I would definately recomend it.
Hope that helps you guys. Let me know how you get on in the comments.
